Westfront Nieuwpoort
A Piece of History Written on the Water
Visit the equestrian statue of King Albert I and discover the impressive story of the intentional flooding of the polder during the First World War.
In October 1914, the Battle of the Yser seemed lost, but thanks to the brave decision of Karel Cogge and Hendrik Geeraert, under the leadership of King Albert I, the polder was deliberately flooded. This tactic forced the enemy to retreat and marked the beginning of the successful final offensive in 1918.
Holiday Suites fun fact: beneath the monument, you’ll find a state-of-the-art visitor center where you can operate the 1914 sluices yourself through an interactive computer game.
