At the end of October 1914 the Belgians threatened to lose the Iron. This changed when Karel Cogge and Hendrik Geeraert, under the leadership of King Albert I, decided to flood the polder plain. This forced the enemy to withdraw, which eventually led to the successful final offensive in 1918.
