In this beautiful nature reserve, a unique phenomenon happens.’De IJzer’ is the only Belgian river that flows directly into the North Sea. Salt and fresh water meet here, creating a special biotope with fauna and flora characterized by a rich variety of bottom-dwellers and salt-loving plants like the glasswort and the plantain. An extensive network of cycling and hiking trails ensures that you can discover this area in a sporty way. Moreover, on the way you will also find information panels that tell you all about this wonderful area, so it will undoubtedly also be an educational trip!
Since July 2018, there is a new path for both adults and children. Scotty, the mascot of ‘De IJzermonding’ takes you on an adventure. For the children there is also a fun game developed where they get answers to all their questions and learn all about the inhabitants of ‘De IJzermonding’. A day in the beautiful nature?
