The Royal Municipal Theatre of Bruges was built in 1869 and is one of the best preserved municipal theatres in Europe.
No less than 46 medieval houses were demolished, streets were straightened and a new theatre square was constructed. The 150 inhabitants were thrown out of work because the bourgeoisie of the time had a wet dream: a cultural temple on a par with the major theatres in Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels, among others.
