De Verzoening
On 8 October 2014, on the occasion of the commemoration of 100 years of the Great War, two sculptures were unveiled. The work of art Reconciliation was created by Willem Vermandere.
The sculptures symbolise a stone dialogue between two figures who meet at the front and who, 100 years later, have become friends instead of enemies. Between them is a no man's land. The hands on the figures represent aggression, reconciliation, shelter and hospitality.
War and peace, past and present. These are themes that are close to the artist's heart. The war history of our region still makes a deep impression on him.
