Searching for Utopia
With this work of art, the artist Jan Fabre emphasised that man continues his whole life long to search for Utopia.
This imposing sculpture, also known as Jan Fabre's Turtle, was placed in Nieuwpoort during the first edition of the Beaufort art triennial in 2003. Because of the many positive reactions the city of Nieuwpoort decided to purchase the work of art.
Originally the Tortoise was placed on the Zeedijk near the Lefebvrestraat. Unfortunately, the artwork at that location suffered from corrosion by sand and the sea wind. Therefore, the work of art was moved to its current location, where it was also given a protective layer of leaf litter.
